Tomorrow is February 14, Valentine’s Day. It is a day where one might choose to profess one’s feelings for someone they like or show appreciation of their significant other with gifts such as the standard chocolates, flowers and cards with sweet messages, along with greetings. They might even be holding these gifts while on the way to a restaurant offering Valentine’s Day specials. This is a day where Cupid, the god of love, is not only busy shooting arrows, but with the various business ventures he is involved in.

Some may deem the day as simply unnecessary to even mark the date on their calendars or even see it as overly romanticised, but there are some reasons why I think it can still be special.

One of the main reasons why is that it can make someone happy. The gestures that one may decide to make, whether grand, elaborate or simply thoughtful, are put towards making someone else feel good. It is doing something ranging from leaving a short message to planning a whole day’s itinerary for you and your Valentine that can not only make someone’s day, but also make them feel special.

Moreover, the day can also be a way to show appreciation for someone you care about and the importance of doing so cannot be overstated. And Valentine’s Day, with its different variations, may help with doing just that. Someone might send a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates as a surprise, or have a long thoughtful letter or social media post prepared, all with the main point of showing appreciation for someone they care about. The most important part is the message that comes from that, which is caring about and appreciating that special person.

Having a date dedicated to giving gifts, showing affection and greetings can be something to look forward to. However, I also think that it is important to note that it is not the only day where one can choose to do something nice for their partner or someone they care about. Flowers, chocolates and sweet messages can be given to them at any time of the year. More importantly, appreciating someone and making them happy should not only come once a year on a designated day.

Moreover, despite what we may believe due to its association with romance, I think the date can also go beyond being just thought of as exclusively for lovers. There are people around us ranging from colleagues to our parents who also need to be shown appreciation and love to, with the Britannica website adding that the day has evolved into sharing affection with friends and relatives.

Valentine’s Day is a date associated with romance. I find it important because of how it can make people happy and feel appreciated. Although these are feelings that don’t need to be limited to a single day, it can still be something to look forward to.
