The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that the public university was recently visited by a delegation from the Republic of Cabo Verde (aka Cape Verde), which was led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration Rui Figueiredo Soares.
The delegation, the statement noted, also included Nuno Miguel Melo Furtado, “representative of Cape Verde to the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao)”.
They were welcomed by UM Rector Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua) and Vice Rector Rui Martins, among other UM representatives.
The statement said that during the meeting, Song introduced UM’s recent developments, its cooperation with higher education institutions in Cape Verde and the situation of UM’s Cape Verdean students.
The statement said that the minister “expressed his pleasure” at visiting the UM campus and mentioned its close relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs). The statement added that UM’s law programmes have also attracted many students from PSCs, with some Cape Verdean UM graduates who returned home taking up important positions in the government.
Moreover, the minister met with the UM’s Cape Verdean students to learn more about their lives at the university after the meeting. The statement added that the delegation also visited UM’s Faculty of Law (FLL) and was briefed about its facilities while accompanied by FLL Associate Dean Augusto Teixeira Garcia.
Other places visited were the University Gallery and the UM Wu Yee Sun Library for a tour of its Rare Book Room and the Portuguese Corner, the statement said.
The Atlantic island nation of Cabo Verde (“Green Cape”) has a population of about 560,000, aside from a sizeable diaspora in Europe and the United States.
