A man and a local woman who married in 2005 and divorced in 2011 were taken last week to a police station for questioning for their alleged involvement in a sham marriage, Public Security Police (PSP) Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Leong, the 52-year-old male suspect surnamed Cen is the owner of an electrical appliance shop, while the local female suspect surnamed Chan works in a restaurant. Cen was originally from the mainland but obtained a Macau ID in 2009.
Leong said that the Public Security Police recently received a report from a resident who claimed that Cen and Chan had engaged in a sham marriage. After identifying the suspects, the police called the suspects on Friday to go a police station for questioning.
The duo told the police that they met at a dinner party in 2004 in the mainland. Cen, looking for a better business career in Macau, suggested Chan take part in a sham marriage for which she would be paid HK$50,000. They married in 2005 and divorced in 2011 after Cen obtained a Macau ID in 2009.
The duo have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing document forgery and false statement charges, according to Leong.
