A local man was arrested on Monday for blackmailing his old classmate out of 100,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a special press conference yesterday.
The 22-year-old suspect surnamed Chan told the police that he’s jobless. Leng said that Chan had blackmailed four underage students in 2021, had been jailed for eight months and is currently on parole.
Leng said the male victim, who is in his twenties and knew Chan when he was young, reported to the police on Monday morning that Chan had been blackmailing him since last November.
According to Leng, Chan accused the victim of exposing the secret of a friend of his and offending the friend, after which he threatened the victim’s safety and blackmailed him repeatedly.
The victim said that he was kicked by Chan multiple times, adding that Chan threatened to hurt him further as well as his family unless he transferred between 300 and 8,000 patacas to Chan’s bank account each month.
Leng said that the victim had been blackmailed out of 100,000 patacas, and after discussing the matter with his family, the victim had finally decided to report the case to the police on Monday.
Chan was caught at a casino in Zape on Monday afternoon.
Under questioning, Chan admitted to committing the crime, claiming that all of the ill-gotten money had been used for his daily expenses, Leng said.
Chan was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Friday, facing blackmail charges, according to Leng.
