A local man banned from driving was intercepted by the police when driving into a no-entry road last Tuesday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said during a regular press conference on Friday.

The suspect surnamed Che, who is aged 25, told the police that he works as an real estate agent.

Lam said that PSP officers intercepted a car while they were carrying out a roadblock in the restricted section of Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro at 5 p.m. last Tuesday, and Che was unable to show his driving licence.

According to Lam, Che was found having been banned for drunk-driving in 2021, during which he was also found driving, after which Che was once again banned for driving under the influence – this time a one-and-half-a-year driving ban – along with a six-month prison term suspended for three years’ probation. Last Tuesday, he was still banned and on probation, Lam noted.

During the investigation, Che claimed that he was driving to pick up his girlfriend because she was sick and needed to be hospitalised.

Lam said Che was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of violation of an official order and breaching a driving ban.
