A taxi driver cheated two passengers out of HK$900 on February 14 after giving them change of just one pataca when one of the passengers gave the cabbie HK$1,010 for a 109-pataca ride, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Wong identified the suspect as a 32-year-old local man surnamed Kam. The victims, a man and a woman from the mainland, were visiting Macau as tourists.

According to Wong, when arriving at the Barrier Gate checkpoint, the woman, who got out of the taxi first, handed the man a HK$1,000 note to pay the fare. The man thought it was a HK$100 note instead and handed Kam the note and an extra HK$10 note. The male victim received a one pataca coin as change and got out of the taxi, Wong said, adding that the taxi drove away before the victims realised they had been defrauded.

After investigating, PSP officers identified Kam as the suspect and managed to contact him on Sunday afternoon, telling him to go to a police station for questioning, Wong said.

Under questioning, Kam admitted to knowingly cheating the duo.

Kam has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning, facing a fraud charge.
