A local woman has been arrested for defrauding a mainlander by claiming that she could help a woman from the mainland get a local work permit (colloquially known as “blue card”), Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Wong said that the 40-year-old suspect surnamed Wong told the police that she’s jobless.

According to the spokesman, the victim was introduced to the suspect, Wong, by a friend of hers last August, who claimed that she could arrange a local job for her if she paid Wong 35,000 yuan (41,000 patacas). The victim paid Wong 10,000 yuan by online transfer as a down payment and visited Wong’s home on Praça de Ponte e Horta several times in the next couple of months, during which Wong kept coming up with excuses to delay the purported arrangement.

The victim lost contact with Wong in December and reported the case to the police.

The suspect was arrested at her home on February 15. Under questioning, she admitted to cheating the mainlander, claiming that she had spent all the filthy lucre on her daily expenses.

Wong was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a fraud charge, according to the spokesman.

This undated handout photo provided by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday shows the fraud suspect being escorted by PSP officers to a police station.
