The Office for Personal Data Protection (GPDP) urged the public yesterday to abide by Macau’s real-name telephone system in accordance with the law, and to protect their personal information, underlining that members of the public should not assist criminals in registering phone numbers by providing them with their personal information.

According to a GPDP statement, criminals tend to lure people with various benefits to provide their personal information to help them register phone numbers, which puts the personal information providers at great risk, and thus they will bear legal consequences for breaking the law.

Yesterday’s statement said that the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau have implemented their own real-name telephone registration systems.

In the past three years, the statement noted, the office fined nine offenders, including local residents, for helping criminals register others’ phone numbers, with fines totalling of 182,000 patacas.
