The two zebra crossings at the junction of Avenida do General Castelo Branco (白朗古將軍大馬路) and Rua Central de T’oi Sán (台山中街) in the peninsula’s Toi San district will be replaced by traffic light-controlled crossings from today, with the aim of ensuring the safety of pedestrians, the Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced in a statement yesterday.
The statement said that the bureau has decided to change the two zebra crossings to traffic light-controlled crossings after considering the continuous rising number of pedestrians walking between Toi San district and the nearby Ilha Verde district.
The two traffic light-controlled crossings will come into use this morning.
The statement said that the traffic lights at the junction have been equipped with vehicle detectors that will record real-time data of vehicular flows there, which will enable the traffic lights to adjust the signal timing accordingly, with the aim of “reasonably” allocating the duration of the passage of vehicles and pedestrians.
There are several schools in the immediate vicinity of the junction.
