A Hong Kong man was arrested on Wednesday when entering Macau through the Taipa Ferry Terminal checkpoint for defrauding two pawnshops in Zape out of HK$110,000 by hocking counterfeit luxury-brand watches, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said during a special press conference yesterday.

Leng said that one of the pawnshop owners reported to the Judiciary Police on Monday that he had been cheated by a customer with a fake luxury-brand watch, resulting in a loss of HK$50,000.

The Judiciary Police identified the suspect as a 42-year-old man surnamed Yeung, and discovered that he had left Macau last Saturday after only being in the city for two hours, according to Leng, who added that PJ officers arrested the jobless suspect upon his arrival in Macau on Wednesday, on whom the officers found two bogus luxury-brand watches and two pawnshops’ pink slips.

A PJ investigation confirmed that Yeung had used the same tactic to cheat another pawnshop out of HK 60,000 last Saturday, Leng said.

Leng pointed out that the maximum value of each of Yeung’s “luxury-brand” watches ranged between 2,000 patacas to 3,000 patacas.

Yeung refused to reveal any details related to the case, Leng said, adding that he was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a charge of fraud involving a large amount of money.
