A local man banned from driving was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The 33-year-old suspect surnamed Lei told the police that he’s self-employed.

According to Lam, in the wee hours of Friday police officers at a police roadblock intercepted a car speeding on Friendship Bridge. Police officers went to the car and asked the driver, Lei, for his driving licence, Lam said, adding that Lei could not present it and was reeking of alcohol.

Lam said that the police officers then looked at Lei’s driving record and found that his driving licence has been suspended due to a drunk-driving offence he committed last November. Lam added that a breathalyser test showed that the driver’s alcohol concentration was 0.74 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

Under questioning, Leung admitted to driving with a suspended licence and that he had been drinking in a bar in the mainland the night before and returned to Macau through the Qingmao pedestrian checkpoint.

Lei’s case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Officer (MP) where he faces aggravated disobedience charges, Lam said. He has also been fined for speeding and driving under the influence.
