A 62-year-old mainland man was arrested on Saturday when he was caught red-handed stealing a brown wallet worth about 8,000 patacas from a man in the Barrier Gate checkpoint area, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said during a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Leong, PSP officers carried out an anti-theft operation on Saturday in the Barrier Gate checkpoint area, where they saw the jobless suspect surnamed Tan walking close to the victim and taking the wallet from him, so the officers stepped forward to intercept Tan, and recovered the wallet containing HK$4,000 in cash on the spot.

Under questioning, Tan, who holds a Mainland Travel Permit, admitted to committing the crime, Leong said, adding that he has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge.
