A Hong Kong man was arrested on Friday for stealing two motorcycles from different locations, the keys of which had been left in the ignitions by their respective owners, and then drove around the peninsula and Cotai, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said during a regular press conference on Friday.
The spokesperson said the suspect surnamed Tou, an unemployed 35-year-old, was visiting Macau when he committed the offences.
According to the spokesperson, the Public Security Police received separate reports from two local men last Monday and Tuesday, who said that they had parked their motorcycles in Rua Formosa and in the Horta e Costa area respectively, and found them missing when they went to pick up their motorbikes an hour or two later.
The spokesperson said that after scrutinising the two areas’ CCTV footage, the police confirmed that the suspect had stolen a motorcycle that had the key in the ignition last Monday in Rua Formosa, after which he drove to the Horta e Costa area where he saw another motorcycle with the key in the ignition. The suspect then dumped the first motorcycle, hopped on the second and drove it to Avenida da Prosperidade in Cotai, before again dumping it there, the spokesperson said.
The police found both vehicles last Tuesday, and intercepted the suspect in a hotel near Avenida da Prosperidade, according to the spokesperson.
The suspect admitted to have committed the offences, and told the police that he stole them for “joyriding” and as a means of transport, according to the spokesperson, adding that the police confirmed that the suspect does not have a Macau driving licence.
The spokesperson said the suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of vehicle theft and driving without a licence.
