The Judiciary Police (PJ) urged the public not to believe a rumour that there is a “ecstasy gang”(迷魂黨) in Macau that could disorientate people and make them reveal their bank account passwords, according to a statement yesterday.
According to the statement, the Judiciary Police (PJ) discovered a message recently circulating on internet social platforms claiming that there is a local “ecstasy gang” that makes passers-by reveal their ATM card passwords and hand the money the victims may have on them over through the use of a substance that purportedly makes the victim dizzy and disorientated.
The statement clarified that the police have not received any report about the occurrence of such an incident so far, and the claim has been verified by the Judiciary Police to be untrue.
The statement urged the public to verify the authenticity of any pieces of information before forwarding them on internet platforms or social media and not to forward them indiscriminately to avoid unnecessary speculation or panic.
The statement also urged the public to always be careful of what strangers tell them and not to believe easily anything that they say, in order to avoid falling into a criminal trap.
Anyone who suspects that he or she has encountered or knows of any suspected criminal activity should call the Judiciary Police hotline on 993 to report it.
