A 14-year-old female student was found lying on her back yesterday in the playground of Escola Secundária Ilha Verde da Associação Comercial de Macau (澳門中華總商會附設青洲中學) on Avenida do Conselheiro Borja after “falling from a building” during the lunch break, according to a statement by the Fire Services Bureau (CB).
The bureau received a report about the incident from a staff member of the school at about 1:30 p.m. yesterday.
The statement noted that the victim remained conscious when she was rushed to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment.
The statement said that the victim sustained a forehead laceration, a contusion to her left knee and a bruise to the left calf, as well as a fractured right calf.
According to the statement, both the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) and Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) have been notified of the accident.
Responding to enquiries by The Macau Post Daily in the afternoon, the Education and Youth Development Bureau said that upon having been notified about the accident, the bureau immediately activated its campus crisis management mechanism to coordinate with the school and a counselling organisation.
The bureau added that it also sent senior officials, supervisors and counselling teams to the school to assist in the follow-up work, and to support the crisis management procedures initiated by the school by providing teachers, students and parents with support in different aspects, including emotional counselling.
The bureau urged students to take the initiative and confide in, and seek help from persons who are trustworthy to them, such as parents, teachers, friends or professional counsellors, if they encounter emotional difficulties or doubts.
The bureau did not elaborate on how and why the student “fell from a building”, nor whether the accident involved attempted suicide.
The Social Welfare Bureau’s emotional support counselling hotline is 2826 1126. Caritas Macau’s Life-Hope Hotline is 2852 5222.
