The University of Macau (UM) recently hosted the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance’s annual working meeting, which gathered over 80 representatives of its 41 member universities, the public university said in a statement yesterday.

The statement did not say when exactly the meeting took place.

The representatives at the meeting gave their insights into upgrading the Greater Bay Area (GBA) into an international education centre, the statement noted.

In his speech, UM Vice Rector Rui Martins proposed that the alliance strengthen cooperation and exchanges with top university alliances around the world. The statement added that representatives from different entities also delivered speeches recognising the alliance’s achievements, and also provided advice on its future tasks.

Moreover, the statement said, representatives of the member universities summarised their work plans, discussed the alliance’s work, and provided suggestions on its future development.

The alliance, according to the statement, was initiated by Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and UM. It was established in 2016, and 42 universities have joined so far.

The member universities regularly hold academic fora and exchange activities to promote cooperation in scientific research and innovation to nurture “outstanding professionals” for the three regions.
