The Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced yesterday that a road tax payment status monitoring system set up in the city’s public carparks will be put into operation at noon on Friday.
According to a DSAT statement, the system monitors the road tax payment status when a vehicle enters a public carpark. The statement added that penalty procedures will be initiated against the owners of vehicles in arrears for their annual road tax.
The bureau uses various electronic technologies to monitor the tax payment status of vehicles on public roads and in public carparks through licence plate recognition and background data, the statement stressed.
This year’s road tax collection period will end on Friday, the statement pointed out, adding that as of 9 a.m. yesterday, about 30,000 vehicles had not yet been taxed.
The statement underlined that those who failed to pay their road tax by Friday will be required to pay at least three times the amount owed.
The statement pointed out that nearly 80 percent of 219,000 vehicle owners have already paid the tax online.
