Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters after an event on Saturday at Coloane Karting Track that his bureau has drafted a plan to hold a Guia circuit running event during this year’s Macau Grand Prix, adding that more spots will be available this year so that more local residents and those from elsewhere can compete in the event.
The bureau hosted its Guia Circuit Fun Run during the 65th Macau Grand Prix in 2018, in which 2,000 spots were available.
Pun also said that for the time being, his bureau has no plans to invite renowned international runners to participate in the event, adding that he would try his best to focus on local residents.
The Grand Prix marks its 70th anniversary this year.
According to Pun, more than 1,000 people have signed up to work for this year’s Grand Prix so far, breaking previous records. He said that the number of local residents who have signed up to work for the upcoming Grand Prix is the largest in history, adding he believed that residents have seized the opportunity to support and participate in this year’s motor races.
Responding to media queries about whether there will be a motorcycle rookie race this year, Pun said that there was already a basic framework for arranging different races, including the Formula 3 and GT Cup, which can only be implemented after signing a contract with the Paris-based Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) or the corresponding event organiser. He added that it takes time to confirm the details, but in response to considering the highlights of the event, the quality of riders, and their safety, only professional racers are being considered at present.
