Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Leong Wai Man says that the government expects the first-phase revitalisation of Coloane’s Lai Chi Vun shipyards area to open in June or July.

Leong made the remarks on Saturday at the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) in Nape on the sidelines of a public session of the government’s ongoing 60-day public consultation on its fourth-batch of cultural heritage evaluations.

The first-phase revitalisation project, covering the five plots of X11, X12, X13, X14 and X15 in the area, got off the ground last year.

The Lai Chi Vun shipyards area was listed as a cultural heritage site in 2018.

There were initially about 16 shipyards in Lai Chi Vun Village, but several of them had previously collapsed. The Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) also demolished two badly dilapidated shipyards in 2017, so there are now about a dozen old shipyards remaining in the village, but many of them are in a tumbledown condition as well.

According to previous government announcements, the first-phase revitalisation will create spaces that combine cultural and creative markets, a leisure square, a multifunctional activity space, and a lime factory exhibition hall.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Leong said that the first-phase revitalisation project of the Lai Chi Vun shipyards area was now almost completed.

Leong said that the first-phase of the revitalised area was expected to open to the public in June or July.

Leong said that the revitalisation will feature spaces showcasing Macau’s traditional shipbuilding industry, a performance stage, spaces for workshops, and other leisure elements.

In addition, Leong said, fairs will be held at the revitalised area at weekends, when simple meals will also be provided.

Moreover, Leong said that for the time being the government will not set up an outdoor car park in the Lai Chi Vun shipyards area. Leong said that drivers visiting Lai Chi Vun can choose to use the nearby Rotunda da Concórdia Carpark, which is located between the private residential estate One Oasis and the Concórdia Industrial Park.
