A Vietnamese non-resident worker (NRW) has been arrested after stealing a smart phone from a drunken local resident, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Nguyen is a waiter in his thirties.

According to Lai, in the early hours of last Thursday, a man reported to the police that his phone, worth 5,600 patacas, had been stolen. The victim said that he had passed out drunk on a bench on Travessa do Almirante Lacerda in Fai Chi Kei district and discovered that his smart phone was gone when he regained consciousness in hospital.

After the incident, the police scrutinised the city’s CCTV surveillance system and observed Nguyen taking the phone when the victim had passed out. Nguyen was summoned to a police station on Wednesday and confessed to stealing the phone for his personal use.

According to Lai, Nguyen has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) and is facing a theft charge.
