A collection of 27 paintings and sculptures is being showcased in My Nini – Huang Benrei Works Private Collection Exhibition at the H853 Art Space in Lisboeta Macau until June 30.
The works created by Huang, a Taiwanese artist, feature a rabbit character named “Nini” as the main theme. A statement from the art space noted that the character is “cute and charming”, and has a gentle and fragile appearance and just a few facial expressions.
The works depict the theme of intertwining “tiny human life and the vast universe”, aiming to show that “the existence and all efforts of human beings are just inevitable phenomena”. However, according to the statement, there are also instances of “warm moments of compatibility between heaven and humanity” though it also comes with a sense of powerlessness.
The statement added that this turns into a message reminding people to fearlessly move forward with a sense of humour when facing the universe, maintaining an optimistic attitude when tackling challenges and difficulties in life.
The character is shown in different styles and also aims to create an atmosphere related to rabbits to echo the Year of the Rabbit and Easter, according to the statement.
The collection is presented by collector and young entrepreneur Arnaldo Ho Yau Heng, who is “deeply fascinated” by the character due to his admiration for Huang’s artistic style and his liking for rabbits, the statement noted.
Ho also finds tranquillity from the character when he encounters pressure and challenges at work, as well as during feelings of melancholy and sadness, with the attitude of taking things steadily embodied by the character enabling Ho to accept challenges and difficulties.
The statement also quoted Huang as saying that “sometimes the world gets dark and heavy, but we can always brighten it with a lighter heart”. Ho, according to the statement, hopes that people can be inspired by these feelings and live with a relaxed mindset when facing challenges in life.
The art space, which is divided into HIDE&SEEK, MY SPRING GARDEN and NINI’s ATTITUDE for the exhibition, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
