One more critical flu case: 75-year-old man

The Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement last night that one more critical case of influenza was reported yesterday, a 75-year-old local man inflicted with chronic diseases.

The critical case recorded yesterday came after a six-year-old girl was reported to have a critical case of influenza on Friday last week.

According to last night’s statement, the 75-year-old man, a retiree, came down with a fever, runny nose and sore throat on Sunday when he was also coughing up phlegm. The man sought treatment at the emergency department of the private Kiang Wu Hospital on Monday night after suffering from shortness of breath, the statement said.

According to the statement, the man tested positive for the influenza A virus in his respiratory specimen. In addition, the statement said, a chest X-ray at Kiang Wu Hospital showed that he was suffering from pneumonia, because of which he was diagnosed with influenza A worsened by pneumonia and respiratory failure.

The patient was transferred to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for treatment in the early hours of yesterday where he was, being in a critical condition, put on a ventilator, the statement said.

The statement said that the patient received a 2022-2023 seasonal influenza jab in November last year.

Meanwhile, last night’s statement also reported that the condition of the six-year-old girl whose critical case of influenza was reported on Friday last week has improved. According to the statement, the girl was removed from a ventilator yesterday afternoon. The girl, who was admitted to the private Kiang Wu Hospital, continues to undergo treatment in its intensive care unit (ICU).

Meanwhile, last night’s statement also announced that 17 flu-like cluster cases were reported yesterday, involving a total of 180 children, comprising school and kindergarten students as well as children from day nurseries.

In addition, the statement also noted that as of yesterday no fatalities caused by influenza have been reported this year.
