The Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM) signed a cooperation framework agreement yesterday with the Macau Institute for Development and Quality (IDQ) to launch Building Information Modelling (BIM) Application and Operation Training Dual Certificate Courses.

CPTTM Director General Victória Alexa Kuan Chan (關治平) said in a speech during the signing ceremony at the centre’s seminar room in the Macau Chamber of Commerce Building in Zape that BIM is a technology that can make all aspects of building design, construction, operation and so on clearly visible through digital means, so that decision-makers can make accurate judgments more easily and reduce the risk of mistakes, so as to improve work efficiency and reduce operating costs.

According to Wikipedia, BIM, which is a process supported by various tools, technologies and contracts involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places, is a computer file that can be extracted, exchanged or networked to support decision-making regarding a built asset.

Kuan also said she hoped that the cooperation deal with the institute will not only provide students with practical skills and knowledge, but also contribute to the development of Macau and also the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA).

IDQ Chairman Tam Lap Mou said in a speech during yesterday’s ceremony he believed that the courses could help students learn practical BIM skills and participate in the “National BIM Skill Level Assessment”, broadening their career path, meeting the local job requirements with BIM skills, and integrating into the GBA and the broad market of the country.

According to Tam, the institute has been approved by the China Graphics Society to become the first examination training site for the “National BIM Skill Level Assessment” in Macau, where three sessions of the examination have already been conducted.

Tam told reporters after the ceremony he estimated that more than 40 people had obtained the nationally recognised Level I and Level II qualifications for BIM modellers.

BIM skills have been applied in many large-scale construction projects, Tam said, adding that the technical strength accumulated by the institute “can make the training of BIM talents more popular in Macau”.

Tam told The Macau Post Daily later in the day that neither the centre nor institute rule out the probability of launching such courses in different languages, such as English and Putonghua, in the future which will be depending on the number of people applying for the class.

Currently, the courses are held in Cantonese.
