A university student has fallen victim to a phishing scam via a fraudulent text message purportedly sent by a telecommunications company, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said in a press conference on Monday.
According to Chong, the local victim’s father reported the case to the police on Friday, saying that his son, who is studying at a university in the mainland, received a text message claiming that he had won a reward from a telecommunications company.
The phishing text contained a link prompting the victim to enter personal information, including his credit card details. The victim provided the requested information as instructed in the message.
The victim later discovered two unauthorized transactions on his credit card, amounting to a loss of 3,120 patacas.
