Two mainlanders have been arrested for stealing a handbag containing HK$35,000 they found in a casino lobby and used it for gambling, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said in a regular press conference yesterday.
The two men are surnamed Guo, aged 47; and Shi, aged 31. They told the police that they work as drivers.
According to Cheong, the police received a report from the female victim last Thursday morning saying that she had lost a handbag containing HK$35,000 in cash in the lobby of a Cotai hotel earlier that day. The police quickly identified the two men with the aid of surveillance cameras, and intercepted the duo near the hotel on Friday afternoon.
Under questioning, both men admitted to picking up the handbag and stealing it, but claimed that there was only HK$17,000 in cash in the bag when they stole it. The duo alleged that they took the money to gamble at the casino where they won HK$45,000, which the police retrieved later in Shi’s hotel room.
Shi and Guo have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, according to Cheong.
