Footbridge linking peninsula’s reservoir & nearby coast to close from Friday, for ongoing A2 flyover project to Zone A

The government announced yesterday that the footbridge connecting Reservoir Park and the waterfront at Avenida da Ponte da Amizade will close from Friday, with the aim of making way for the ongoing project of building a flyover connecting the area and the Zone A land reclamation area.

According to a statement by the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) yesterday, the footbridge will remain closed until July next year.

The construction of the two-way flyover got off the ground in November last year. The 500-metre-long flyover will run between Avenida 1º de Maio near the Macau Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant in Areia Preta district and Zone A, which lies off the north-eastern coast of the peninsula.

The flyover will be the second link between the peninsula and Zone A, officially known as A2 Link. The A2 flyover project is scheduled to be completed in October next year.

The A2 flyover will cross over Avenida da Ponte da Amizade, the avenue leading to the Macau-Taipa Friendship Bridge.

Currently, Zone A is only connected to the peninsula at the busy Oriental Pearl roundabout (Rotunda da Amizade), on the peninsula’s north-eastern coast.

The current vehicular connection between Zone A and the Oriental Pearl roundabout is officially known as A1 Link.

During the footbridge’s closure between April 28, 2023 and July 2024, according to yesterday’s statement, pedestrians can still use the footbridge to walk between Reservoir Park and the dog park that is located next to Avenida da Ponte da Amizade, near the Macau Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant, but they cannot walk to the coastal walking area of Avenida da Ponte da Amizade.

Reservoir Park is the public park surrounding the peninsula’s reservoir.

The ongoing A2 flyover project also includes the construction of a 300-metre-long footbridge connecting Zone A and the current footbridge that runs between the coastal Avenida da Ponte da Amizade and Reservoir Park. The 300-metre-long footbridge will be built next to the A2 flyover.

Yesterday’s statement noted that the A2 flyover project will require the temporary demolition of the current Avenida da Ponte da Amizade-Reservoir Park footbridge’s access point that goes down to and up from the waterfront walking area of Avenida da Ponte da Amizade.

This undated handout photo released by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) last week shows a pedestrian walking over the footbridge from Avenida da Ponte da Amizade’s waterfront en route to the nearby Reservoir Park.
