A non-resident worker (NRW) from the mainland has been arrested for stealing a handbag she found in a taxi, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said during a press conference yesterday.
Lam said that the 40-year-old suspect surnamed Man is a kitchen assistant. The person who lost the handbag is a female from the mainland.
According to Lam, the victim forgot to take her handbag, containing some cash and identification documents, when she got out of a radio taxi in the afternoon of January 10. After failing to retrieve the handbag herself and suspecting that her handbag had been taken by others, she reported the case to the police and estimated a loss of 15,000 patacas.
Police officers scrutinised their citywide CCTV surveillance system and identified a passenger, Man, who they assumed to have taken the handbag later that day from the cab. They contacted Man and summoned her to a police station for questioning.
Man went to a police station on Wednesday together with the stolen handbag, where she admitted to stealing out of greed.
Man has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, Lam said.
