The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that a UM delegation recently visited Technical University of Munich (TUM), Constructor University in Bremen, and Leibniz University Hannover in Germany, as well as KU Leuven in Belgium.

The statement noted that the delegation was led by UM Rector Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua). The visits aimed to set up research and academic collaborations between UM and universities in Europe to expand UM’s international network and exchange experience in higher education.

At TUM, the delegation visited its campus and laboratories, while TUM Chair of Thermodynamics Wen Dongsheng  gave an introduction to TUM’s latest developments and research results in the thermodynamics field, the statement said. A meeting was also held to discuss interdisciplinary collaboration in energy and materials science, among other fields.

The UM representatives then visited the private Constructor University in Bremen and were welcomed by its President Stanislav Protasov and other representatives. They signed a memorandum of understanding and an agreement on student exchanges, and discussed faculty and student exchange programmes, according to the statement.

At Leibniz University Hannover, the delegation met with its President Volker Epping and other representatives. The statement said that discussions about academic exchanges, research collaboration, and talent training were held. A consensus on how to strengthen exchange programmes for doctoral students and promote collaborative research in both universities’ areas of strength was also reached.

Moreover, delegation members visited KU Leuven in Brussels and its Faculty of Economics and Business and the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering Science to learn about their academic structure, the statement said. A meeting on the possibility of launching student exchanges and ways to enhance collaboration in training doctoral students and research was also held.

According to the statement, Song said that the visits were an important initiative to implement UM’s internationalisation strategy.

UM, as an “internationalised” university, will continue promoting academic exchanges and cooperation with renowned universities worldwide with an aim to improve its academic quality, global impact and to create more faculty and student exchange opportunities.
