The Macau Museum of Art (MAM) is currently displaying 190 of Fang Lijun’s works from the early 1980s to 2022 in an exhibition titled “Fang Lijun: The Light of Dust”.

The exhibits comprise sketches, oils, prints, ink paintings and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), among others.

According to a recent statement from the museum, the exhibition’s title refers to the old Chinese idiom “concealing one’s brilliance to merge with the dust”. Themed “Human & Figures”, the exhibition comprises four main sections: Passage: The Process of Growing Up, Introspection: Self Portraits, Mutual Reflections: Friends, and The Light of Dust: Human”.

Fang, the statement noted, is among one of the most important representatives of the mainland’s New Art Movement. He was born in 1963 in Handan city in Hebei province, and with his “bald-headed” figures, he pioneered the “Rascal Culture” and “Cynical Realism” in Chinese contemporary art in the early 1990s, the statement pointed out.

The statement added that one of his works was even used for the cover of  Magazine in 1993, noting that it was a first for Chinese art.

The exhibition runs until June 11. MAM is open daily, including public holidays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the last entry being at 6:30 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. The statement added that guided tours in Cantonese are available during the weekends and public holidays.
