In two separate cases, a local man in his twenties and a Filipino non-resident worker (NRW) in his forties were arrested last week for stealing a mobile phone worth 9,000 patacas and 3,000 patacas in cash respectively, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Lai, the Public Security Police received a report from a man on March 29 who suspected that someone had stolen his mobile phone which fell from his trouser pocket while riding a motorbike across Sai Van Bridge, adding that he had rung his phone number on several occasions once he realised that his phone was lost, but the phone was switched off.

After scrutinising the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system, PSP officers discovered that the victim’s mobile phone fell out of his pocket when passing by A-Ma Temple in Barra, Lai said, adding that the local suspect surnamed Wong picked up the mobile phone and fled the scene by motorbike.

Wong, who was summoned to a police station on Wednesday for questioning, admitted to committing the crime and handed the mobile phone to the police, Lai said.

Meanwhile, a local woman reported to the Public Security Police on January 13 that she forgot to take the cash after withdrawing HK$3,000 from an ATM on Avenida de Almeida, adding that when she made enquiries in the bank about the whereabouts of the money she had left in the ATM, she was told that someone had taken the money after she left, according to Lai.

Lai said that PSP officers arrested the Filipino suspect on Thursday in Rua da Tercena, and he admitted to committing the crime.

The two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, Lai said.
