Macau Pass said in a statement yesterday that in addition to Alipay, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay, Simple Pay and other local e-wallets, its payment devices can now also accept Alipay+ market-leading partner e-wallets from the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, namely, GCash, Touch ‘n Go eWallet, and TrueMoney respectively.
Alipay+ is a payment system launched by Alipay last year to connect merchants and consumers worldwide.
According to the 2021 Mobile Wallet report by Juniper Research, Southeast Asia is the fastest growing region in the world for e-wallets, the statement noted, which pointed out it was estimated that by 2025, the number of e-wallet users in six Southeast Asian countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – will exceed 440 million, thanks to Southeast Asian governments’ efforts in promoting the digital economy and developing e-commerce in their regions.
The statement quoted Sun Ho, chairman and CEO of Macau Pass as saying: “Through the cooperation with Alipay+, the innovative one-stop payment solution aims to accelerate the digital transformation of local business operators, create a connected international digital payments ecosystem for Macau, solve the problem of cross-border payment for international tourists, and help enterprises find new marketing growth opportunities”.
Sun underlined that comprehensive and innovative digital solutions are the “key” to accelerating the digital transformation of Macau’s service industry.
With the gradual return of international tourists, especially those from Southeast Asia, the statement said the company believed that it could help local businesses to provide more convenient multi-scene services for foreign tourists, contributing to Macau’s economic recovery and growth.
