The University of Macau (UM) Museum of Art officially opened on Tuesday, displaying 60 pieces including art works in the museum’s collection as well as those created by UM faculty staff, according to a UM statement earlier this week.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U, Deputy Head of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR Tian Xiaoping, UM University Council Chairman Peter Lam Kam Seng, and UM Rector Song Yonghua hosted the opening ceremony of the University of Macau’s Art Museum.

Covering an area of 2,000 square metres and four exhibition halls, the museum currently displays nearly 60 works of art by UM staff, including sculptures, calligraphy, and traditional Chinese paintings.

Song said that the museum has the functions of collection, exhibition, teaching, and communication. In the future, exhibitions will be held regularly to display teaching achievements and carry out art popularisation activities, Song noted.

Song also said that in the future, the museum will make full use of the university’s own advantages to integrate Chinese and Western arts, and to help Macau’s cultural and artistic development.

UM staff member Leong Lampo, a representative of the curatorial team, said that the museum is mainly used for teaching and learning exchanges between university staff and students. Leong pointed out that the museum will host art exhibitions of the local and four famous mainland art universities in the second half of this year.
