Three men have been separately arrested for drunk driving, two of them for hit-and-run offences, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Lam identified the suspect in the first case as a man surnamed Chan in his forties. Chan told the police that he works in a casino.

According to Lam, Chan drove into the back of a lorry parked on Avenida do Progresso in Taipa causing damage to the lorry’s bumper and exhaust pipe. Chan then got out of his car to check the damage but returned to the vehicle 20 minutes later and left the scene.

About an hour later, PSP officers discovered Chan’s car in a carpark on Avenida Olímpica in Taipa and subsequently arrested Chan after a breathalyser test detected his alcohol concentration as 2.37 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood. Chan confessed that he had crashed into the lorry.

Lam said that the suspect in the second case is a 70-year-old local man surnamed Cheong who told the police that he works as a driver.

According to Lam, PSP officers saw Cheong crashing his car into a metal post on Estrada da Penha on Saturday evening and then leaving the scene. The officers intercepted Cheang nearby and found that he had a blood alcohol level of 1.24 grammes per litre after being breathalysed. Cheong admitted to drinking during lunch and hearing the sound of a collision while he was driving, but claimed that he only knew he hit the post after he was told by the police.

Meanwhile, Lam said that the suspect in the third case is a 58-year-old Hong Kong resident surnamed To. He is an engineer.

According to Lam, To rear-ended a bus on Avenida do Almirante Lacerda on Sunday night, and he was stopped at the scene by passing police officers. To’s blood alcohol level was found to be 2.25 grammes per litre after being given a breathalyser test. Lam said that To admitted to drinking before driving.

No passengers on the bus were reported to have been injured.

Chan, Cheong and To have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing drunk-driving charges, Lam said, adding that Chan and Cheong also face evading responsibility charges due to their hit-and-run offences.
