The Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement yesterday that one more critical COVID-19 case was reported on Wednesday, a two-month-old male baby.

The statement said that the patient, a premature baby boy, came down with vomiting, cyanosis, and dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing) on Monday, after which he was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for treatment, where he tested positive for COVID-19 in a nucleic acid test (NAT).

According to Wikipedia, cyanosis is the change of body tissue colour to a bluish-purple hue as a result of having decreased amounts of oxygen bound to the haemoglobin in the red blood cells of the capillary bed.

According to the statement, the baby, a local resident, was then diagnosed with the novel coronavirus disease complicated with sepsis. The infant was then put on a ventilator as he was in a critical condition.

The public hospital reported the critical COVID-19 case to the Health Bureau on Wednesday.

The statement said that the baby’s condition “significantly” improved yesterday after he had been in a critical condition, because of which he was removed from the ventilator.

The statement noted that the baby was under the city’s minimum age of COVID-19 vaccination of six months. His mother had previously received two COVID-19 jabs, but did not receive a booster shot during her pregnancy, the statement said.

The statement said that all the family members living with the baby have tested negative for COVID-19 in their rapid antigen tests (RATs).

10 more COVID-19 patients admitted on Wednesday

Meanwhile, the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre announced in a statement yesterday that 10 more COVID-19 patients were admitted to treatment facilities on Wednesday, one at the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, seven at the private Kiang Wu Hospital, and two at the University Hospital run by the private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Taipa.

Consequently, a total of 90 new COVID-19 patients were admitted to treatment facilities between May 1 and May 17.

Last month, there were only two days when Macau had new COVID-19 patients admitted to treatment facilities – two on April 25 and three on April 27.

According to the Health Bureau’s COVID-19 website, which was updated yesterday, Macau’s official cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases stood at 3,610, of which 3,456 had meanwhile been cured.

Macau has not recorded any COVID-19 fatalities for 104 days in a row, from February 3 to May 17. Consequently, Macau’s official COVID-19 death toll has remained unchanged at 121.
