A beautician has been arrested for providing illegal beauty treatments, including Botox and hyaluronic acid injections to 70 customers in a beauty salon, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Lei said that the female suspect surnamed Ao Ieong is in her thirties. She is the manager of a beauty salon in the Bairro da Horta da Mitra neighbourhood.

According to Lei, a resident reported to the Health Bureau (SSM) recently that someone was providing illegal beauty treatments in a beauty salon. On Thursday, police officers went to the beauty salon and confiscated large amounts of medicine and medical equipment, which included lipolysis needles, botulinum toxin, weight loss injections, and hyaluronic acid. Ao Ieong was arrested at the scene.

As one of the chief components of the extracellular matrix, according to Wikipedia, hyaluronic acid contributes significantly to cell proliferation and migration, and is involved in the progression of many malignant tumors.

Under questioning, Ao Ieong admitted to charging 1,100 patacas per injection a customer received. She told the police that she had earned 300,000 patacas since last November through these injections and that she bought the medicines and medical equipment from the mainland.

Ao Ieong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of the unauthorised exercise of a licensed profession, Lei said.
