Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said in a regular press conference on Monday that 12 local and mainland residents have separately fallen for concert and theme park ticket scams.

According to Lei, a local woman in her thirties last month came across a post online offering a discount on Hong Kong theme park admission tickets and accommodation packages in June. The victim then contacted the seller, purchasing three sets of tickets on two separate occasions and transferring HK$1,710 and HK$3,420 to the seller’s bank account.

On May 9 the scammer contacted her again, claiming to have low-priced Hong Kong concert tickets. The woman transferred another HK$6,000 to the fraudster.

Lei said that the scammer and the victim became “good friends” after chatting with each other several times. On two occasions the victim even lent HK$7,600 and HK$8,400 to the scammer when he or she asked, but the scammer never returned the money. The victim finally realised she had been defrauded after another friend told her that the seller is a scammer.

In another case, a local victim also in her thirties recently saw a post selling theme park admission tickets, and she transferred HK$ 3,280 for the tickets. However, the victim never received the tickets and when requesting a refund, she lost contact with the swindler.

Lei also noted that 10 local and mainland women fell victim to a scam after purchasing concert tickets for a Korean girl group concert held in Macau recently from social media platforms but never receiving the tickets. They reported losses ranging from over HK$2,000 to over HK$20,000.
