The one-month “Macau Library Week”, co-organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), the University of Macau Library, and the Macao Library and Information Management Association, ended on May 14, attracting more than 70,000 participants, or 10.4 percent of the population, in over 60 reading promotion activities in more than 110 sessions, in which, the first-ever “Promotion Days” that were held at the Macau Cultural Centre in Nape logged 9,000 attendees, according to an IC statement on Wednesday.
The annual event, which started on April 15, aimed to cultivate lifelong reading habits among the public, creating a social reading atmosphere.
The statement noted that this year, more than 140 entities, covering government departments, banks, public service institutions, private companies, integrated resort operators, associations, cultural units, schools, as well as daycare centres and elderly homes, among other social service facilities, promoted their own “reading points”, registering the participation of around 43,000 people, an increase of more than 1.5 times compared to last year.
The “Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau 4·23 World Book Day Creative Contest”, jointly organised by the Public Library of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and public libraries in Guangzhou, received nearly 1,200 entries in the art and writing categories, and awarded prizes to 65 winning works, which will be displayed in an itinerant exhibition to take place in Public Libraries and local schools, encouraging children and young people to diversify their reading habits and consolidate their mastery of different perspectives, according to the statement.
