A 17-year-old male high school student has been arrested for stealing a smart phone from the cash register of a restaurant, Public Security Police (PSP) Leong Chi Seng said at a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect attends a school in the northern district.

According to Leong, when a staff member of the restaurant on Rua Quatro do Bairro da Areia Preta was preparing for business on May 18 at 9 a.m., the student entered the eatery and wandered around, asking the staff when they would open for business and when they would start serving. The staff member ignored the suspect.

After the student left, the victim discovered that his or her company smartphone placed on the cash register had vanished. Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, the staff members discovered that the youngster had taken the phone. The victim reported the case to the police. The victim said that the phone was worth 2,000 patacas.

The suspect was arrested in the Avenida de Venceslau de Morais neighbourhood. He admitted to the crime and claimed that he had sold the phone in Macau for just 50 patacas.

The suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Leong.

Macau’s age of criminal responsibility starts at 16.
