A taxi driver was arrested yesterday for drunk driving, hitting road barriers, running a red light and reversing against the flow of traffic, a Public Security Police (PSP) statement said.
The suspect is a 65-year-old local man.
According to the statement, a police officer saw a taxi reversing along Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida yesterday morning while he was on patrol. The officer immediately stopped the taxi and found that the male driver was reeking of alcohol, while the vehicle appeared to have been damaged.
A breathalyser test detected his alcohol concentration as 2.11 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.
After scrutinising CCTV footage, police officers discovered that in addition to the reversing along Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, the taxi had previously driven reversed down Rua de Malaca and Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, during which the driver also ran a red light and hit roadside barriers twice.
The statement noted that the suspect would be transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) today. He faces charges of evading responsibility and drunk driving.
