Macau's 30 casinos run by six rival concessionaires generated gross gaming revenue (GGR) of 15.5 billion patacas (US$1.93 billion) in May, a year-on-year growth of 365.9 percent, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has announced today.

Last month's GGR was the highest of any month since January 2020.

Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22, 2020. The local government gradually began to ease its novel coronavirus prevention and control measures last December.

Last month's GGR accounted for 59.8 percent of the GGR in the pre-pandemic month of May 2019.

In the first five months of this year, GGR grew 172.9 percent year on year to 64.92 billion patacas, exceeding the GGR for the whole of last year (42.19 billion patacas) by 53.8 percent.

Baccarat is Macau's most popular game of chance. According to the latest available DICJ figures, baccarat generated 83.9 percent of Macau's GGR in the first quarter of this year, when the sector ran 6,000 gaming tables and 12,000 gaming machines.

Macau's gaming concessionaires are contractually obligated by the government to focus on the development of non-gaming attractions.
