A 28-year-old female tourist from the mainland was hit by a public bus on a zebra crossing on Rua da Ribeira do Patane in the Inner Harbour area yesterday afternoon, the authorities said.

According to statements from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police (PSP), the accident occurred at around 5 p.m. when the TCM No. 101X route bus hit the woman when she was walking across a zebra crossing.

The woman, who sustained abrasions to her elbows, was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for treatment. There were no updates about her condition as of last night.

According to the PSP statement, the 50-year-old bus driver passed a breathalyser test.

The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.

Pedestrian ‘suddenly darts into the road’: TCM

TCM told the local media yesterday that when seeing the woman “suddenly dart into the road”, the driver immediately slammed on the brakes. However, TCM said, the driver was unable to stop in time so the bus still hit the pedestrian because the braking distance available was too short.
