The Judiciary Police (PJ) urged residents yesterday to beware of sweepstakes scams to prevent their credit card details and personal information from being stolen.
According to a PJ statement, the Judiciary Police have received a number of reports from residents, saying that they were requested to provide their phone number, credit card details and verification code by their “friend” on social media platforms after having been told that “they had won the annual lucky draw of an online shopping platform”, after which the victims were unable to log into their social media account while, at the same time, they found that their credit card data had been stolen.
The Judiciary Police urged the public to stay vigilant against people who request personal information, bank or credit card details and one’s verification code on the internet, by reconfirming the social media account holder’s identity through a phone call, stressing that members of the public should never provide any information to those who would not confirm their identity to them on the internet, so as to avoid any financial losses.
Similar scams have previously happened in Macau, in which members of the public’s accounts on social media platforms or messaging apps were hacked to send messages to their friends and relatives in their contacts to obtain personal and credit card information under the guise of participating in a purported lottery.
