Representatives and chefs from 23 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy worldwide, including Macau, have again been invited by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) to the city for familiarisation, exchanges and culinary demonstrations for members of the public, according to an MGTO statement on Tuesday.

Macau was designated a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO in October 2017.

According to the statement, the representatives and chefs will join the “City of Gastronomy Showcase” at the 11th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo (MITE), being one of the expo’s “major highlights”. It is also MGTO’s first post-COVID-19 pandemic “large-scale international gastronomic exchange”, the statement noted.

The statement said that the chefs will take turns presenting their gastronomic arts at the expo in 24 sessions of the culinary showcase from June 30 to July 2. Spectators can also taste culinary delights prepared by the chefs after each show.

MITE, the statement added, will also feature the “Gastronomic Pavilion” and “The Cellar” as new highlights to promote Macau as a Creative City of Gastronomy.

Moreover, the representatives will attend an internal meeting on July 1 to make suggestions, exchange ideas and explore new cooperation opportunities to “foster the development of the Creative Cities of Gastronomy” with other member cities online and offline.

Both the representatives and chefs will also visit local wet markets and “distinctive bazaars”, as well as experience Macau’s traditional fishing culture and visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Macau, according to the statement.
