The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) has announced that its new Black Box Theatre, which is part of the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM) complex in Nape, will come into operation early next month.

The construction of the Black Box Theatre, which got off the ground in November 2021, was completed at the end of March this year.

The new facility’s operational start was announced in a statement by the bureau on Saturday.

The statement noted that after the new Black Box Theatre at the Macau Cultural Centre comes into use, all activities and events scheduled to be held at the current black box theatre, which has been operating at the Old Courthouse in Avenida da Praia Grande on a temporary basis, will be relocated to the new facility.

The statement also noted that the three-storey Black Box Theatre, which is connected with the adjacent Macau Cultural Centre, has a gross area of 3,110 square metres.

According to the statement, the new Black Box Theatre comprises two theatres, which can accommodate 140 and 160 audience members respectively.

Saturday’s statement also said that the bureau organised a fact-finding tour at the new Black Box Theatre earlier that day for around 50 representatives whose cultural or arts groups or associations have performed at the current black box theatre at the Old Courthouse or the Macau Cultural Centre.

During Saturday’s tour, the statement said, Leong Wai Man, the bureau’s president, and other IC officials briefed the representatives on the various equipment and facilities in the new Black Box Theatre, as well as listening to opinions and suggestions from the representatives, with the aim of making possible improvements to the facilities and the arrangements for their use.
