Two local women have separately fallen for credit card fraud involving a total loss of over 80,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said in a regular press conference yesterday.

According to Ho, one of the victims told the police on Friday that she received a message in early June “reminding” her that her credit card reward points were expiring. The message also showed a link leading to a website to redeem gifts, leading her to enter her credit card information and verification codes.

On June 5, the victim received text messages indicating that her credit card had been used for an unknown purchase of around 12,200 patacas. After checking with the bank, she discovered that the purchase was made at an electronics store in Hong Kong.

In the second case, the other victim told the police on Friday that she had received a text message earlier that day indicating a purchase of approximately 71,000 patacas on her credit card. Since the victim did not make the purchase, she suspected that her credit card information had been stolen and promptly cancelled the credit card.
