History
During yesterday’s inauguration ceremony, Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) Director Derby Lau Wai Meng noted that a post office in the Mong Ha neighbourhood first came into service in 1989.
Lau noted that the old post office stopped operating in September 2010 because of the then redevelopment of the old Mong Ha social housing neighbourhood consisting of low-rise buildings, where the old post office was located. The old housing neighbourhood was constructed in the 1980s.
The current Mong Sin social housing estate consisting of two towers is officially known as Mong Sin Building, which was the first phase of the redevelopment project of the old Mong Ha social housing neighbourhood. Mong Sin Building, which is located on a plot next to where the old housing neighbourhood was situated, was completed in 2010.
Lau noted yesterday that a post office serving the Mong Ha neighbourhood reopened in January 2012, on the first floor of Mong Sin Building, the one that had been operating until Saturday last week.
The current Mong Tak social housing estate comprising two towers is officially known as Mong Tak Building, which was the second phase of the redevelopment of the old Mong Ha social housing neighbourhood. Mong Tak Building, which is located where the old housing neighbourhood was situated, was completed in 2021.
Lau said yesterday that with the second phase of the Mong Ha social housing’s redevelopment having been completed, the government decided to relocate the Mong Ha Post Office from Mong Sin Building to Mong Tak Building.
Lau said that the new Mong Ha Post Office, which started operating yesterday, has an area of 156.95 square metres, bigger than the previous one in Mong Sin Building.
According to Lau, the new post office cost 3.41 million patacas in total.
Meanwhile, Lau told reporters after yesterday’s inauguration ceremony that the government was studying a possible increase in postage rates.
