The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement yesterday that under the influence of a low-pressure area between the South China Sea and the Philippines hot weather with both showers and sunny periods is expected over the next few days, along with a high possibility of thunderstorms.

Low-pressure areas have “lower atmospheric pressure than its surrounding areas,” according to the website of the University of Texas at Austin. The result of which “brings cloud, wind and rain” according to the Met Office UK.

The bureau’s statement said that the low-pressure area is expected to move to the eastern coast of Guangdong from today to tomorrow; however, the low-pressure area will continue to affect Macau’s weather for the next two days.

According to the statement, weather that alternates between sunny and rainy is expected over the next two days with occasional thunderstorms. The bureau forecasts the temperature over the next week to range between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius.

At the moment, the bureau said it was unsure if the low-pressure area would develop or fade, therefore, the bureau said it would continue to pay close attention to the area’s development.

The statement also said that Macau was expected to be experiencing more frequent heavy showers early next week due to a southern air current that might affect the southern Chinese coast and the northern area of the South China Sea.

The bureau urged members of the public to take rain gear when going outdoors and to pay attention to the bureau’s various news channels for the latest weather updates.
