The Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) said in a statement yesterday that a professor from the Faculty of Law at the University of Macau (UM) has revealed that one of his or her doctoral students attempted to bribe him or her to obtain approval for their thesis proposal and a “smooth” graduation.

The statement did not reveal the gender and the surname of the suspect or the professor involved.

The statement noted that the student from the mainland, who was admitted to the Faculty of Law, did not submit a thesis proposal that met the academic requirements within three years of enrolment and was at risk of being forced to withdraw from the programme.

Before the deadline expired, the supervisor discovered a red envelope containing a stack of cash inside a book given as a gift by the student. The supervisor immediately contacted the university’s administrative staff and arranged to meet with the student, who admitted that the cash was intended to bribe the supervisor.

According to the statement, the student had also attempted in the past to offer the supervisor thousands of patacas worth of shopping vouchers after enrolling in the public university, but was sternly warned and the vouchers returned by the professor.

The statement also said that the case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation, where the suspect faces bribery charges.
