The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) will host “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023” from July 28 through October with nearly 30 exhibitions around the city, which IC President Leong Wai Man said yesterday was budgeted at 12 million patacas,
Leong made the remarks during yesterday’s opening ceremony at the Cultural Centre at Nape, with the attendance of Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes and other government officials, as well as representatives from the city’s six integrated resorts and creative and cultural sectors.
This year, according to the statement, sees the third edition of Art Macao, which aims to create an international iconic brand of cultural tourism for Macau, featuring the integration of resources from all walks of life, combining diversified cultural perspectives through international artistic development and the cultivation of local creative forces.
According to Leong, the mega event will be themed “The Statistics of Fortune”, and over 200 contemporary artists from more than 20 countries and regions have been selected to bring an immersive cultural atmosphere with the entire city as an art gallery and garden.
This event will also include international art exhibitions and invitational exhibitions by local artists presented by the six integrated resorts, Leong noted, “fully demonstrating their investment in cultural resources”.
The event’s chief curator, Vice President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Qiu Zhijie said that this edition of the event will put special emphasis on the artworks that explore religious traditions from a new perspective and that delve into the history of science from profound cultural perspectives.
According to Qiu, the event will present artworks in the form of paintings, engraving, photography, mixed media, sculptures, installations, videos and artificial intelligence (AI) art, adding that he will host three thematic talks introducing the thoughts behind the curation process.
