A Public Security Police (PSP) statement said that a policeman from the Police Tactical Intervention Unit (UTIP) died yesterday after he had completed a 1,800-metre training session.
The victim was a 45-year-old senior officer surnamed Chan. He joined the unit in 1998.
According to the statement, at about 10 a.m. yesterday, tactical unit members were running along the cycle path in Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus. After Chan had completed the exercise, he said that he felt unwell and was instructed to stop training and rest. The statement noted that Chan felt better after a while and continued doing stretching exercises and later returned to the UTIP headquarters near the Barrier Gate checkpoint.
The statement said that Chan fainted at the headquarters at around 11:37 a.m. and was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre.
Chan died after unsuccessful emergency treatment, the statement said, adding that the cause of death was still under investigation.
